Have y’all noticed how early the stores were getting ready for Christmas this year? It’s sad how incredibly commercialized Christmas has become, with everyone fighting to get your dollar. Fortunately, this year, it won’t be an issue for my family. You see, we made a decision last night to NOT exchange gifts this year. Sounds crazy, right? Noperoni! Here’s why…
In today’s day and age of instant gratification, who waits until Christmas to get stuff that they want? Not many. Little kids perhaps, because they simply don’t have the means. However, you gotta admit, the masses (whether they have the means or not!) buy that gadget, trinket, thing they need/MUST have…and they buy it immediately.
With this in mind, how in the heck are you supposed to effortlessly buy gifts for people? Our family has been very fortunate in that circumstances have gone our way. Yeah, we could buy gifts for each other, but then again, what do you buy for people who already have everything they need or want? It makes for quite the stressful shopping trip(s). Tis not something that puts one in the “Christmas Spirit.”
None of us wanted to stress and honestly, none of us needs more “stuff”. So, we all decided to try something new this year. We would practice some of the real reasons for the season: Family togetherness, fellowship, celebration, food and fun….all sans gifts! I think it will be great. We can play games, tell stories, and reminisce. We can savor our meal and not rush to open presents. Yeah, it’s going to be different, but I’m even more excited about Christmas this year!
